Cheating in Online Games :: written by chronic
Hi my name is Brian. I'm here to touch upon the topic of "cheating" in online gaming. As I proceed to express my opinions and views, I would ask for whomever reads this to take what I am saying with a grain of salt. Also this is just one mans opinion, one man who's been gaming for many years and has seen the ropes. This rant might offend you, might make you think "my god this guy needs a life", but since i've been given this forum, I might as well go all out.

Recently I was playing a game of "quake1 clan arena" at a popular arena server. About midway through this game, the entire server was booted by a player named "Parn", who i've had run-ins with in the past. I proceeded to goto irc at the time, resolve his IP to a name and whois, finding out his identity. Later that same night, I noticed he was playing at the same server so I decided to play a quick game with him. Granted Clan Arena is not my BEST game, I do realize that many people cheat and i'll be beaten just because my quake isn't edited and modified to extremes.

At the middle point of the 2nd game, the scores were about even when this player Parn fell into one of my "traps". I decided to stop short of a corner, retreat a few steps back for no reason other than to test his ability to see me around a corner. Of course he bit, firing a barrage of rockets at the point which i should have entered. I asked him for a screenshot immediately after this happened, which he was cool about and obliged. What he didn't realize is that i'd ask him for "Version;wait;wait;wait;path", which does NOT show a view of his quake player models, or map edits, this will show me the PATH which quake was loaded in, the pak files and the client version/date started.

Below is a screenshot of the last time I was asked for a screenshot, this how all of our quake should look.

Now, taken into consideration is the fact that Parn MIGHT NOT even have bullshit player models in the first place, I didn't ask for a multitude of ss's of player models like i could have.

Point being in this first instance, is WHY would people have to hack a game that is 5 years old and counting, absolutely destroy the fun and enjoyment of the game by cheating people? I never understood this. I will never will.

My next example is a player named Cabalist, also related is a player named Exile. Cabalist is a known cheater in this game quake, he's been cheating for as long as most people have even been playing. 100-130 frags in one 4-4 20 minute game is not uncommon. Now his friend/old clanmate Exile claims to never cheat, yet he will NOT submit a screenshot similar to what Parn gave me above. I was also sadly in the same clan as Cabalist and Exile, which i can't deny. Exile currently plays in Clan Kapitol, cheating his way to the top. Here is an interesting log file I've attained. :: click here ::

Not only does this player Exile cheat in quake1 to the fullest, he's also moved onto cheating in Counterstrike, where he admitted to me(braggingly) about being banned from servers for using speedhacks and aimbots. Somene please tell me WHY ANYONE would want to cheat in a video game, moving 1000x faster than all the other opponents and gunning down 80 kills in a 6 player game with 33 consectutive headshots? Are these people serious? This is what i would describe as a "goobie", a lonely child who has nothing better to do than ruin other peoples fun, or in some cases (including mine) pastimes.

That is exactly it, Quake1, counterstrike, all these games to me are pasttimes. I play for fun, I play in competitive spirit as well. Why am i writing this rant you may ask? I'm writing this to exploit these 2 certain cheaters whom have been cheating games for awhile, gaining notoriety in their own little worlds as "elite" players. I'm writing this because no one else seems to care that with every game that comes along, the "80/20" rule is applied. 80% of players play for fun, 20% play to ruin the fun. I hope I have enlighted some upon these few players previously mentioned, their cheating habits and their disregard for other peoples fun.
